LONDON: The London drugstore chain said on Thursday it was "delaying" its £1.9bn offer to supply Viagra, the little blue pill which treats erectile dysfunction, following a £1.2bn acquisition by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, after the firm lost its exclusive rights to the drug.

Viagra, the first widely-used erectile dysfunction drug to win approval from the European Medicines Agency, is the first drug to be available on the NHS, but the first to be made available over the counter.
The move comes as Viagra is also being put on the NHS after two of the world's biggest drug companies, GlaxoSmithKline and Merck, announced last month that they would sell the little blue pill to the US. The move comes after a major clinical trial in which more than half of men with erectile dysfunction were given sildenafil, or Viagra. The trial found that men taking Viagra were four times as likely to suffer erectile dysfunction compared with men taking a placebo.
The trial, conducted by the US-based US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the company's own National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) said it found that Viagra significantly increased the chances of achieving and maintaining an erection.
Pfizer said it planned to continue supplying the drug, while the New York-based company said it would take up to six months to produce a generic version.
Pfizer, which had been selling the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra for the past year, will be selling its Viagra in the UK, where Viagra was first introduced in 1998.
The Viagra patent was set to expire in November 2012, but Pfizer said it hoped to launch the drug in the US by the end of the year.
In October, the company will begin selling Viagra in the UK through its own drug store chain Boots, which operates the same as its own store in the UK.
Pfizer said it had a "total of 4,500" tablets of Viagra sold in the US on Wednesday. It added that Viagra would be sold to US customers by May 2018.
